Chinese officials call ‘996’ work schedule ‘illegal’
China’s Supreme People’s Court said on Thursday that the “996” work schedule—working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week—is “a serious violation of the country’s labor law.” The court published guidelines with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security in a Thursday document containing 10 examples of related labor lawsuits. In one case, a worker sued a courier company for firing him after he refused to work “996” hours following a two month attempt at the schedule. The court ordered the company to pay the worker severance for illegal termination.
